Can I use self-tan when pregnant?
-
The active ingredient in fake tan is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a type of sugar. It's non-toxic and works by interacting with the protein of the skin cells in the top, dead layer of your skin.
The chemical reaction within these dead cells results in the production of a brown pigment called melanoidin. Some fake tans also contain an ingredient called erythrulose, which works in the same way as DHA.
DHA and erythrulose won't harm your baby if you use them as a mousse, lotion, cream or wipe. When rubbed onto your skin, DHA and erythrulose don’t go beyond the top cell layer. This means they aren’t absorbed into your body. As your skin renews itself, the fake tan fades as the skins cells are shed.
Le Tan tanning ingredients comply with all local and international regulations and are approved for use in leave-on topical cosmetics.
Australian and International Toxicological databases (Australian HSIS, USA TOXNET) suggest that the ingredients, and therefore the product, will be safe to use during pregnancy.
We do however, acknowledge that every pregnancy and every person is different and the use of any personal care product during pregnancy is a personal decision. We do not know in giving this advice if you have any complications or any other health concerns and therefore, any advice given is general only. We would recommend that if you have any specific concerns you should consult your health care professional.
